Péter Magyar (Magyar Péter), born in Budapest in 1981, is a Hungarian lawyer and politician who has been Prime Minister of Hungary since 9 May 2026, when the newly elected National Assembly chose him by 140 votes and he was sworn in the same day. A law graduate of Pázmány Péter Catholic University, he worked for years in the Fidesz-era state apparatus, as a diplomat at Hungary's Permanent Representation to the EU, in the Prime Minister's Office, as chief executive of the state Student Loan Centre (Diákhitel Központ) and on the boards of several state-owned companies. He broke with Fidesz in February 2024 after the presidential pardon scandal that led to the resignations of President Katalin Novák and of his former wife, ex-justice minister Judit Varga, took over the small Tisza party, became its president in July 2024 and led it to second place (29.6%) in the June 2024 European Parliament election, sitting as an MEP in the EPP group until May 2026. In the parliamentary election of 12 April 2026 Tisza won 53.2% of the list vote and 141 of 199 seats, a two-thirds majority that ended Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule, and Magyar won the Budapest 3rd constituency. As of October 2026 his single-party government has brought Hungary into the European Public Prosecutor's Office, unlocked part of the EU funds frozen under Orbán, capped prime ministers' time in office at eight years, overhauled public media, created a National Asset Recovery and Protection Office and used a constitutional amendment to end President Tamás Sulyok's term, a step Fidesz called 'tyrannical' and 'illegitimate'.
